Thinking Activity on I. A.RICHARDS Figurative language .
I.A. Richards "Practical Criticism "written in 1929.His Criticism gave new path to literary criticism. He was staunch advocate of a close textual and verbal study & analysis of a work of art.
Three objectives to write The Practical Criticism:
1. To introduce a new kind of documentation to those who are interested in the contemporary state of culture whether as critics, philosophers, as teachers, as psychologists, or merely as curious persons.
2. To provide new technique for those who wish to discover for themselves what they think and feel about poetry (and cognate matters)and why they should like or dislike it.
3. To prepare the way for educational methods more efficient than those we use now in developing discrimination and the power to understand what we hear and read. In his methodology, a lot of importance is given to the “words”.
He believed that poet writes to communicate, and language is the means of that communication. Language is made of words, and hence a study of words is all important if we are to understand the meaning of a work of art. Words carry four kinds of meaning: Sense, Feelings, Tone and Intention.
Four types of misunderstanding:
o 1. Misunderstanding of the sense of poetry: Careless, intuitive reading (rhyme or irregular syntax)
o 2. Over-literal reading – prosaic reading
o 3. Defective scholarship
o 4. Difference in meaning of words in poetry and prose.
Literal and figurative language is a distinction within some fields of language analysis, in particular, stylistic, rhetoric and semantic. Literal language uses words exactly according to their proper meanings or definitions Figurative as in or non-literal language uses words deviating from their proper definitions in order to achieve a more complicated understanding or heightened effect. Figurative language is often achieved by presenting words in order for them to be equated, compared, or associated with other normally unrelated words or meanings.
Figurative language is the use of words in an unusual or imaginative manner. Often figurative language involves the use of metaphors, similes, personification, idiom etc. If you are figuratively jumping for joy, it means you are so happy that you could jump for joy, but are saving your energy for other matters.
There are several poems and also songs which lyrics / words are inappropriate and not suitable there or we could use another word instead of it. Music gives us refreshment, and peace but there are many songs in Bollywood, which lyrics rather stupid and meaningless.
INTENTION :
Literature teaches us to become a better person, this is moral philosophy and central idea of it.But here I found song that gives bad idea to live life.
Lyrics:Shabbir Ahmed
Singers:Vishal Dadlani, ArmaanMalik, Badshah.
Movie:All is Well.
Rule saare break karo
Jo kabhi na kiya wo karo
Party karne ka mood bane toh
Weekend ka na wait karo
Arey common ye sabke vichar humein chahiye
Hufte mein chaar shanivaar hone chahiye
Hufte mein chaar shaniwaar hone chahiye
Shanivaar bole to Saturday
Wo bhi chaar chaar
Kabhi aisa bhi ho suraj chhuti pe ho
Ghadi ke kaante mutthi mein hon
In the lambi Limo full-on masti bhi ho
Saath mein hot beauty bhi ho
Are speaker ka volume hazaar hona chahiye
Hufte mein char shanivar hone chahiye
4 Saturdays in one week? how's that even possible in first place, and secondly it is not even good for the progress of the country. people would not do any thing but rest and enjoy if this kind of such thing happens. this is rather bad lyrics of a song to give in society. We lived in society with rules and regulations but in this song poet said that to break rules .And it is immorality.
SENSE AND FEELING :
For example ,'Tamma Tamma loge ',The lyrics of song are like this :
This song is without any meaning Like Tamma ,Bin bajati hue nagin etc.I found another song form movie "ROWDY RATHORE" 'Chinta ta chita chita chinta ta ta'.This song's lyrics also does not make any sense at all.
