Northrop Frye- Thinking Activity

  1. What is Archetypal Criticism? What does the archetypal critic do?

The general dictionary meaning of the Archetypal criticism is an image or symbol or original modal that is used repeatedly by many arts and Literature to spread some kind of idea like in Durgapuja and Ganesh chaturthi all the rituals are same by which the idea of death that everybody has to face. It identifying the situation, patterns of action, character types. According to Carl Jung "collective unconscious" that is general resource we have. Archetypal critics observes the Images,symbols,place/location, music that how much related to the situation and apply to art.

2.What is Frye trying prove by giving an analogy of ' Physics to Nature' and 'Criticism to Literature'?

Physics is a systematic study of nature. Same art also is a subject of systematic study. For that there is criticism. Frye wants to prove that as student of physics says he is learning physics not nature, student of literature learns criticism and not literature.

3. Share your views of Criticism as an organised body of knowledge. Mention relation of literature with history and philosophy.

Criticism is an organised body of knowledge which means we have started learning progressively. Our experience shows that there is something progressive about learning literature. When we learn something, we give examples from philosophy and history because history is connected with past events and philosophy is connected with ideas.

4.Briefly explain inductive method with illustration of Shakespeare's Hamlet's Grave Digger's scene.

Inductive means observation which is particular to general. To take steps back for seeing wider view of the scene. We can refer it in literature. In grave digging scene of 'Hamlet' we see only verbal meaning of his soliloquy. One step back Wilson Knight and Spurgeon group sees images of corruption. One another step back and Still and Shaw group sees as dramatic context.  One more step and we sees archetype of the scene like love death, his struggle with Laertes.

5.Briefly explain deductive method with reference to an analogy to Music, Painting, rhythm and pattern. Give examples of the outcome of deductive method.

The deductive method of analysis deals with the established meaning of work from the general truth to particular truth. So to explain deductive method of analysis here Frye illustrates Music and Painting.

6.Refer to the Indian seasonal grid (below). If you can, please read small Gujarati or Hindi or English poem from the archetypal approach and apply Indian seasonal grid in the interpretation.

FOUR SISTERS  :
Spring stirs her eager young
Giving life, renewed to those
Who stand about and doze
She whispers hope, of things begun
Beneath winter's cold repose.

Summer, smiling golden rays
With ample breasts of rain
Feeds, and soothes the pain
Of changing white to green to gray
While dressing her wards again.

Fall, donning multicolored hues
Weeps, her leaves cascading
As her life is brilliantly fading
She takes with her the morning dew
Leaving frost in the trading.

Winter, wearing crystal shards
Bares her nudity to all
Standing gracefully tall
She lays a white robe upon my yard
While singing her wanton call.

And I.....well, I sit passively by
Watching through shielding glass
Four sisters marching past
Thanking God who dwells on high
For His daughters stark contrasts.

ANALYSIS:-

The poem 'Four sisters' which was written by Timothy Brumley. This is the great poem on seasons. sg, summer, monsoon and winter described in it. Brumley, very beautifully describes four seasons. Here, he use various imagery to adore his poem. ABBAB is the rhyme scheme of the poem.
Here, poet also mention four seasons as a daughters of the God. the poet thanking God who lives on the top because of his daughter's contrast nature. And he feels himself lucky because he watches four sisters through the shielding glass. In the end we can say that the poet tried to explain the nature and four seasons in his poem.
