Structuralism and Literay Criticism -Gerard Genette

¤ Being a structuralist critic, how would you analyse literary text or TV serial or Film? You can select any image or TV serial or film or literary text or advertisement.                         In literary theory, Structuralism is an approach to analysing the narrative material by examining the underlying invariant structure .There are many Structuralist critics likeFerdinand Saussure, Gerard Genette , Roland Barthes, Claude Levi-Strauss etc. Structuralist critics found basic common structure in every work. As all the human beings  have a same structure from inside, similarly literature has basic structure and it is same everywhere whether it movies, TV serials or advertisement etc.
  
                          Here I found structures as a structuralist critic. 
♧ Revenge
♧Love 
♧Quest 

            I found some Bollywood movies and their themes like Revenge. 
                           
For Example :-

1) Agneepath :-

                           This movie directed by Karan Malhoora in 2012 .Vijay gains the confidence of notorious gangster Rauf Lala in order to reach Kancha Cheena,a crime lord operating from Mandwa.Vijay wants to avenge his father who was framed and killed by Kancha.

2) Kahani :-

                         Kahani movie Directed by Sujoy Ghosh in 2012.Vidhya Balan played role of widow.His husband Arup Basu was an IB officer and killed in poison Gas Attack .In whole movie she want to take his husband's murder in Kalkatta. And in the end she get success in her revenge.

3) Ghajini :-

                       Ghajini movie Directed by A. R.Murgadoos and Co directed by Amir Khan in 2008.Ghajini also a revenge story of hero.And Villan killed his girlfriend. That's why hero want to take revenge. And in the end he get success in his revenge. 

                         Many T.V series also have the same structure of detective series.      For example:-‘CID’ and ‘Crime Patrol’.  Structure is same for example murder occurs, detection and murderer found by detective. This structure is same in every episode they just do changes in representing the events. Same structure is also found in many Movies also like ‘Drishyam’.

                      In many literary texts also we find the similar structure.
For Example:
                       ‘Doctor Faustus’ by Christopher Marlowe and ‘Frankenstein’ by Marry Shelley. In both the text  we see that the central character is in Quest of knowledge which ultimately leads them to their downfall. Same structure is also found in the  Greek mythology of , ‘Icarus’.

■ Significance of words 'Fire' and 'Ice' in both the poems and its meaning just as separate words.
There are two poems which we have discussed in our class 

1.' Fire and ice'  by Robert Frost 
2.'Ice and fire'  by Edmund Spenser

                        First time when we read both the poems we know the differencebetween both the poems. In Robert Frost's poem he put more impotrance on fire.And In Spencer's poem he gave more impotrance on ice.
    
                  But at one stage we get knowledge about both,  that they both have power to burn anyone. This way they both are different as well as some point same.

                     Both the poems have different meaning and represents the symbol and sign. One poem shows us the capacity of disaster and second was the different one which shows the possibilities between fire and ice. Poem represents the desire and hate. We can also see the paradox between the fire and ice, and the for destruction both are the sufficient.
